Title: Copyright and Fair Use: Matching Policy with Mission  Pat Brown

Presenters: Pat Aufderheide (American University-Center for Social Media)
Brandon Butler (Association of Research Libraries-Public Policy Initiatives)
1:00 – 5:00  Wednesday, October 3
Workshop Rate:  CCUMC Member $50  -  Non-member $75

Description: How can video be used in teaching? Can scholars collaborate online, sharing relevant library resources? Can streamed media be placed in e-reserves? Should student work incorporating copyrighted material be posted on the university's website?

In this workshop, two of the co-facilitators of the Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Academic and Research Libraries discuss how judges' fair use interpretation has changed dramatically since 1990, how this change is reflected in codes of best practices in fair use, how such codes differ from guidelines such as CCUMC's, and how changed interpretation enables a more effective implementation of mission. After a backgrounder and a tour of resources that can assist daily practice, the workshop coordinators will work with workshop participants on scenarios in which fair use intersects with accomplishing mission, will address challenges the workshop participants bring, and will share solutions found by related communities.
